With the goal of replacing all petroleum-based materials and products with plant- and biomass-derived alternatives, they have been developing materials derived from non-petroleum, plant and biomass sources. These include biodegradable resins, biodegradable plastics, coating materials, paints, glue, plasticizer, lubricant, 3D printed products such as furniture, nanocellulose, biochar etc… all of these products made from various plants biomass-based materials and organic waste such as wood waste. This development concept was compiled into an academic paper written by Dr. Ryohei Mori (Ph.D. in Engineering), the company's CEO, and was selected for the front cover of RSC Sustainability (Royal Society of Chemistry).

This time, their water-based organic nail polish with nail-repairing ingredients and 100% natural remover were showcased and displayed at the Cancer Survivor Fashion Show at Kansai Rosai Hospital in Japan.

Chemotherapy is one of the options for cancer treatment although it has side effects including changes to the nails. This condition is believed to be caused by the inhibition of basal cell division and proliferation in the skin, the activation of melanin-producing cells, and the impairment of nail growth.

Anticancer drugs that may cause nail disorders include fluorouracil (5-FU), TS-1, capecitabine (Xeloda), docetaxel (Taxotere), paclitaxel (Taxol), cytarabine (Cylocide), and some molecular targeted drugs.  These chemotherapy treatments often cause nail side effects including darkening of the nails, ingrown nails, thinning nail and brittle nails.

In such cases, applying nail polish can reinforce patient's nails while covering up discoloration, which may ease symptoms and help cancer patients to feel more positive.

For this purpose, a nail polish with nail and skin friendly ingredients is especially ideal.  Regular nail polish contains organic solvents that create a strong, sharp smell, making it less ideal for patients with weak nails. In this regard, water-based nail polishes alleviate these issues.

The water-based nail polish (base coat and color) developed by Green Science Alliance uses organic components as its one of primary ingredients. These ingredients are extremely safe for the human body, with some even being used in food products. It also contains nail-repairing ingredients such as keratin. Furthermore, nail polish remover is also made from 100% natural ingredients, instead of the commercially available acetone-based removers that carry the risk of irritating your nails.

Thanks to these unique features, their nail cosmetic products were showcased at a cancer survivors' fashion show and were well-received for future consideration.

In Japan, this initiative - where cancer patients dress up and style themselves to stay positive - is called "appearance care" (cosmetic and styling support for cancer patients). "Appearance care" is defined as a multidisciplinary approach by healthcare professionals to support patients and their families - who face physical, psychological, and social difficulties resulting from appearance changes associated with cancer and its treatment - based on comprehensive assessment from the time of diagnosis (National Cancer Center, Japan).

Unlike conventional nail art meant for glamorous styling, the purpose of appearance care nails is to preserve nail health, reduce anxiety caused by changes in appearance, and help individuals maintain their QOL (Quality of Life) and a forward-looking attitude. People don't appreciate how important fingernails are until they experience a problem with fingertips. In cancer care, nail loss and other complications frequently disrupt daily activities, such as opening cans or buttoning clothes.

In such cases, the role of appearance care for nails is to maintain nail hygiene and provide proper care, such as moisturizing. This helps reduce discoloration, damage, or discomfort as much as possible, fosters healthy nail growth, and ultimately contributes to maintaining the patient's QOL.

Going forward, Green Science Alliance remains committed to focusing its efforts on the development of nail cosmetics that are gentle on both people and the environment, including our appearance care nail line.
