Frisco, TX - Most people know EMDR as a therapy for trauma. Fewer know that it is increasingly used for grief that will not lift. As the country marks National Grief Awareness Day on August 30, Mosaic Way Counseling in Frisco is answering the two questions people ask most often before they try it, and that most practices never address.

The need is real and now has a name. Prolonged Grief Disorder is a persistent and complicated form of grief that affects an estimated 7 to 10 percent of bereaved people. It is linked to sleep problems, poorer health, and difficulty at work and in relationships, and it is now formally recognized in the DSM-5-TR, the field's main diagnostic manual.
The first fear is the big one. "Will EMDR make me forget?" It will not. People who complete EMDR for grief tend to report that painful memories feel less vivid and more distant, not erased. The goal is to keep the bond with the person while easing the sharp pain that surfaces with each memory.
The second question is one few clients know to ask. "Is my therapist actually trained to do this?" EMDR is a specialty that calls for dedicated training, and not every clinician who lists it has completed the full course of study. At Mosaic Way Counseling, every therapist at the Frisco office is trained in EMDR.
"People come in afraid that processing the loss means letting go of the person. It is the opposite. EMDR helps the memory stop ambushing you, so the love can come back into focus."
Erin Waldrop, MA, LPC-S, Founder and CEO of Mosaic Way Counseling
EMDR is not a replacement for grieving, and it is not right for everyone. At Mosaic Way Counseling, clients set the pace, and the work begins with a complimentary 30-minute consultation. Sessions are held in person at the Frisco office, open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
